My sibling deedee has weighed in on the enduring charms of Jo Stafford, which seem to me beyond dispute. But there is another side to Ms. Stafford that is also highly entertaining; she and her husband Paul Weston invented alter-egos in Jonathan and Darlene Edwards, a duo who mangled the genre of cocktail pop in a witty and subtle way, just barely straying off key and not... quite...getting the timingright. It doesn't sound like a particularly durable musical joke, but... MORE
Singer/songwriter Peter Salett held a record release party at M Bar in Hollywood on July 17 for his upcoming album In the Ocean of the Stars. His music has been featured in films such as Judd Apatow’s Forgetting Sarah Marshall, HBO’s Cat Dancers and Down in the Valley starring Ed Norton. On the new album, Salett retains his characteristic folk-country style, but tunes such as True in Time and Miss You are unique in their early 50s/60s pop rhythms and echo-heavy slide guit... MORE

Now aged 59, Trevor "Jimmy London" Shaw formerly sang with the Inspirations for Joe Gibbs, and the Untouchables, before becoming a soloist. His "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" was the first LP ever recorded at the brand new Randys Studio 17 (the first studio in Jamaica to use four track technology), back in 1970, and its instrumental sophistication (the Impact All-Stars, the Now Generation, Skin Flesh and Bones and Soul Sydicate were the backing bands), was regarded as rema... It's rather funny sometimes what you might be mistakenly forwarded in email. In my own world -- well, I'm Just The Reporter, but the people who run Lollapalooza sent me what I consider to be a rather sensitive list of contacts, which I wisely forwarded on to mxdwn's PR person. Suffice it to say, however, that now I know who to ask if I ever want to interview Nine Inch Nails. Or Kanye West. Or Love and Rockets. Or Rage Against the Machine. Or MGMT. Or... you get the picture... MORE
Freddie Hart is primarily a Country artist whose successful career in that genre spanned the mid-60s through the early 80s. But I never heard of him, or knew this, until I started looking for the back story behind this fabulous rockabilly track Dig Boy Dig I found on the Proper box set Classic Rockabilly. Freddie's career started in the 1950s, when he recorded this side for Capitol in 1956. It features Merle Travis on guitar. Freddy looks back on it without affection, ... MORE
Some people just love the inside of police stations, i guess:
Rapper DMX accused of taking someone's identity Rapper DMX was arrested at a Phoenix, Arizona, mall Saturday on suspicion of giving a gave a false name and Social Security number to a hospital to get out of paying for medical expenses. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said that when DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, went to Scottsdale's Mayo Clinic in April, he used the name Troy Jones and failed to pay... MORE
Well, everyone's still asleep 'round these parts and I'm getting hungry. Perhaps a bit of steel-rolled oats with fresh blueberries? What's on your plate?
This is the video for Slipknot's "Psychosocial" that premiered on Mtv Friday night. Nothing special, but the new masks are neat and fire is always good.
Temptation (Original Demo);
. Sounding like a poor mans 'Tainted Love' the original version of Heaven 17's 'Temptation' drones on a bit...and then it changed...a lot. Both where produced by BEF (Heaven 17) so who got hold of it and gave it the horn? Getting Carol Kenyon in to give it better female vocals and a orchestra arranged and conducted by John Barker obviously helped, but it makes you wonder who stops everything and says 'No, we are going to do it like this ins... < To some of us of a certain age with certain life experiences it seems as though so many Creedence Clearwater Revival songs were anti-war songs, either explicitly or metaphoricaly. Their heyday was, after all, the years of the Viet Nam Conflict. John Fogarty could vest his songs with the angst and anger of the times. Juju Stulbach of The Mosquitos takes on one of Fogarty's more poignant yet angry lyric's and gives it a winsome melancholy reading. Its sweet, but... MORE
