One spring morning in 1973, when I was nine years old, I woke up and my mom was gone. This was one of those, she went out for a loaf of bread and never came back deals, but I didn’t know that then. What I did know, was that it wasn’t entirely out of the question for my parents to be apart. I think my dad played on that fact, and it pacified me at the time.During my first years my family moved a lot and sometimes one parent would go ahead of the other to start a job or fin... MORE
I am in a black hole of creativity tonight. I have posts that I need to write, research and publish. But I don't see it happening. Not right now. When I first came to MOG, I saw it as an outlet for my thoughts and tastes in music. Eventually it grew into something more. Instead of launching into a long-winded story about something else entirely, I would like to ask these questions. Why do we MOG? Or more importantly, Why do we stay to MOG another day? I wil... MORE
....and exposing the originals. I feel bad for the Kirkwood brothers, because, well, here's the thing. If I* had a dime for every time I had to correct someone in college and inform them that "Plateau" or "Oh Me" or "Lake Of Fire" wasn't a Nirvana song, but a Meat Puppets song, I'd be less broke, let's say. Now, to be Curt and Chris Kirkwood, and have 30 year old fratboys yelling out "Nirvana!" in the middle of their SXSW reunion shows....that must feel *great. So, t... MORE

BalloonaticHello, my name is Slug, and welcome to my first article for MonsterFresh.com. It is a humble article, but it had ambitions to be so much more. Originally, this article was going to be a big, garish piece of writing, throwing around big, garish quotations by the Kirkwood Brothers of The Meat Puppets, one of the best psychedelic rock bands ever, revealing all their drugged-out splendor first... Jameson reminded me of the Meat Puppets with his post yesterday, and this song is perfectly summarizing my Monday mood. Climbing out of bed this morning was certainly an uphill battle, and the clutter on the table (or desk in my case) is getting out of hand for sure. I admit Curt Kirkwood's voice can be grating at first, but for me it is a good type of inharmoniousness. I won't even ask if anyone else is having a case of the Mondays, cause I'm liable to get my ass ... MORE
Last month, I gave a friend of mine an extra ticket to come with me to see The Stooges. This month it came back around to me in the form of a free Meat Puppets ticket. I love how things like this work in our lives. I got right up front against the stage. Was crushed and hit in the head and stepped on such as all the things we endure to be up front. But alas I forgot my camera. All these pics from my husbands cell phone would have been terrible if we weren't that clos... MORE
Back in the mid-'80s, in pursuit of a story for Rolling Stone, I road in the van with Black Flag to Las Vegas, where they were playing a gig in a building that we were told was normally used to shoot porn films. Opening for Black Flag were the Meat Puppets. I'd never seen them before, and they blew me away. A lot has gone down since then -- with me, with the members of Black Flag and with the Meat Puppets. But now they're back in action, with a new album, Rise To You... MORE
Brothers Curt and Cris Kirkwood have completed work on their first Meat Puppets album together since 1995's "No Joke!," Billboard.com has learned. "Rise to Your Knees" will be released June 26 via Kansas City, Mo.-based indie label Anodyne Records, and will be supported by the Puppets' most extensive tour in years. Before he could resume playing music with his brother, Cris Kirkwood had to overcome a near-fatal heroin addiction and complete an 18-month prison sentence st... MORE
Finally...the Kirkwood brothers have gotten together to record some new music. 'Rise To Your Knees' reminds me of their glory days, circa 'Meat Puppets II'
Its a really, REALLY good album...well worth picking up. Here is one of my favorite tracks off of the brand new one
