Here's the first track of my new album. There's a short story behind this one, too. When I was young, I used to tap dance. My mom was a dance teacher and taught in downtown St. Louis a few days a week. I was brought along and naturally, at 3 years old, started taking the class for little kids--you know, this is your right foot, this is your left foot... i guess all you do for the first year is the Hokey Pokey. I stuck with it for about 13 years, and did a few things... MORE
Tribute or insult, tribute or insult... that's what went through my head before I recorded Cold Sweat with my trio for our upcoming album. Not a day passes that I don't hear a James Brown tune (see my music collection...). Especially considering his recent passing, I thought it would be appropriate to take a stab at recording a song he wrote. I chose Cold Sweat because it's relatively easy to translate to a trio. There aren't too many syncopated horn parts, just the "... MORE
I've just booked the CD release party gig for my upcoming album: June 13 @ the Parkside Lounge in NYC Parkside is on Houston at Attorney St. sort of between Aves B & C. It'll be a good time. There'll be food, hopefully some free stuff to give away, and we're going to play a long, funky set. If you're in NYC and dig the Meters or funk-laden organ trio ala (early) Soulive, you'll enjoy yourself and you'll enjoy the CD. If you want to be reminded by email about this... MORE
It's interesting to sit here and read everyone's thoughts on my previous post about downloading music. I feel like most people download illegally more songs than they'll admit, and justify it by saying all kinds of things. I'm alright with that, whatever floats your boat. By illegal, I simply mean the copyright owner is not being reimbursed for the transaction in anyway. Until that law changes, it's illegal. This is a discussion that needs to be constantly happening u... MORE

Hey, at least you're getting 22.5 hours notice... We'll be playing our brand of funky jazz, or jazzy funk, or something like that. I know myspace is the devil, but you can go there to check out a couple tunes we recently recorded: Cameron Mizell on MySpa... MORE

I'm currently writing and recording music for my next album, and constantly looking for sources of inspiration. Tonight I went to a small cookout with my neighbors and met a bunch of new people, several of which were artists. Just hearing about their work, not to mention seeing some of it, really inspired me to sit down and start writing music. I've realized that I'm most creative musically when I'm not thinking of music. Lately, my biggest creative influences include ... MORE
Well, I figure my first post might as well be about my album, to get this out of the way. I recorded this in 2004 while in Bloomington, Indiana. The band was made up of mostly IU jazz musicians, and the playing is outstanding, I was very lucky to have all these guys play my music. Please listen to the tunes on this page or visit my website. If you like what you hear, you can buy my CD at numerous places online, such as my site or CD Baby or iTunes, or you can do me a ... MORE
