Stopped in on the latest instantiation of Phil & Friends the other night. It's been a year or more since my last Phil show and this one was, frankly, damn good. Of particular note was the newest (and youngest by far) member, Jackie Green. He is truly a kid but an excellent multi-instrumentalist. And he "gets it" in terms of what Phil's looking for...At one point after he'd traded leads with Larry Campbell on guitar, then run over to the keyboards to add some fills, I thought to myself "What's next, the harmonica?" Of course, the harmonica came out next. (I think it might have been on "Mississippi Uptown Toodle-oo, or maybe Jackie's "so hard to find my way...) Anyhoo, other highlights (look, there were multiple dueling-guitar-gasms between Larry and Jackie, I'm not going to go into them here other than to say the "shakedown-althea" duo was truly awesome) included Lil' Stevie Berlin sitting in for all of first set. Unfortunately, the first third was marred by a truly noxious mix.
Phil and Molo create a fearsome, yet nuanced, rhythm section. Really, the band is something to see/hear.
And dammit, it's really neat to see Phil having such a good damn time.

Gads, it's been a bit. I've been nicely distracted by all the other MOGs. So here's to distraction. And lurking! Bob and the boys put in a very good show (the second of the SF dates). While Bob's at the top of his game -- as are George Ricselli and Tony Garnier -- I'm not enthralled with the two guitarsts. The multi-insturmentalist, Danny, is very good but tends to get lost in the mix at almost every show I've seen w/ him in the band (4x, I believe). On the other hand, "Workingman's Blues, #2" was just extraordinary. As was the night's treat, "John Brown." Even two mediocre guitarists can't screw up that song. Friend of mine born and bred in Philly, during the 60s, finally saw Dylan about a week later (in San Diego where Bob pulled out "every grain of sand"). Awe mixed with regret at not having been to a show in about 20 years. (Not that the '80s were particularly interesting period for the old man from Minnesota.) All I can say to Pete Townsend (in re: his petulant little interview in the current RS): Since you haven't put out a new album in, like, decades, please pipe down.

So, saw Mogwai Saturday night at the Fillmore. Second time I've seen them perform but the first complete show. I still can't name songs, not surprising given their song titles ("A cheery wave from stranded strangers" or "Mogwai Fear Satan" to name two) and preference for insturmentals, but boy was it a fun show. Pensive to expansive. Songs do actually have beginnings and they eventually end. But that's about it. They have an interesting (but not new) approach to dynamics. And they play their guitars are really, really loud. My kinda band. Most interesting to me was the crowd. (I really loved the music, but I've already said that.) I would describe Saturday's house at the Fillmore as extremely respectful of the what the band is doing with songs. Where there were extended silences or low-volume drones within songs, you could hear a pin drop in the audience. Compared to most gigs at the Fillmore where the cocktail chatter and "house" noise are practically deafening, this crowd could have been at Davies Symphony Hall.
