Randy Newman talks to MOG about Harps & Angels, Dick Cheney and Roman Polanski

Terry Staunton writes: "When Randy Newman finally picked up an Oscar in 2002, after 15 previously unsuccessful nominations, the biggest cheers were not from the A-list audience in sharp tuxes, shimmering gowns and borrowed bling. His long-overdue recognition, courtesy of the Best Song award for If I Didn’t Have You, from the soundtrack of Monsters Inc, provoked overwhelming whoops from the orchestra pit, which he considers the greatest compliment of all."

Artist: Cold War Kids

Warp's own store, Warpmart, categorizes the album as "Drum and Bass / Breakcore / Electronica", but I assure you, nothing could be further from the truth!"

Furr is like a big bowl of The Beatles, Pavement, Dylan, Waylon Jennings, Uncle Tupelo, Wilco, and The Grateful Dead all mixed together for an end result that smells magnificent. The album kicks off with "Sleepytime In The Western World," a song that’s impossible not to compare to Wilco."

Misheard Lyrics

Sun Sept 28 2008

scottyhons: "So I was listening to a cover version of a very, very well known song today (I'm embarassed to say what it was, but no, it wasn't the Nirvana song attached to this post) and decided to look up the lyrics. I had always heard a few words one way, but the covering artist pronounced the words in a way that made me unsure of what the correct lyrics were. Sure enough, although I had heard the song hundreds of times, I was way off on a few vital words."

Mogger of the Week

Say hello to Elton Noon!

http://mog.com/Elton_Noon

Once a small-town guy who wasn’t very into music, aside from "listening to Joni Mitchell and Anne Murray with my parents as a kid," Elton Noon says it was a performance by Björk at an opera house on her Vespertine tour that was the inspiration for his current music obsession.

Elton Noon, recent art school graduate, explains, "At the time I was thinking loads about slow and conceptual ideas and her show with pulsating sounds from around the opera house really connected to me at the time. Seeing Matmos as Björk’s supporting band opened my eyes to a whole new world of conceptual and alternative music that I otherwise wouldn’t have learned about."

Upon moving to the UK five years ago he found himself immersed in "grimey and dark culture: Late night shows, wild parties, raves, club culture." It was then that he discovered Joy Division's album Still and it marked another pivotal point in his music listening.

Discussing music "with people who don’t take it too seriously" and taking people up on suggestions is one thing Elton enjoys. He thinks MOG is great because of the "genuine feeling of love and sincerity that you don’t find on any other music/social networking sites. People are genuinely interested in reading [one’s] posts and are always there to suggest something new or something to expand upon."

Stop by and say hi to Elton Noon!

Reflecting on GZA/The Genius & His Latest Album, "Pro Tools"

Mogger Dead C writes: GZA/The Genius, from the infamous Wu-Tang Clan, is still on tour and his latest album, Pro Tools (Baby Grande), is still fairly new, but the particular performance that I saw took place on the 26th of last month, and I was seriously beginning to wonder if the topic was getting stale. It's true, I almost abandoned this review until I remembered this quote that I had read from GZA himself: "I'm not one to write a rhyme in thirty minutes." Read More

Album Reviews of the Week

Artist: Jenny Lewis

Album: Acid Tongue

Sun Sept 21 2008

Joxley: "Listening to Rilo Kiley’s Under the Blacklight, it would be easy to assume Jenny Lewis was an out and out city girl – it is a record that plunges through the grime and detritus of the sprawling metropolis, unearthing players, pornstars and countless other villains. Yet Lewis’ solo albums, the second of which sees release Stateside on Tuesday, are a much more Mid-Western affair."

Remember how wide your eyes got as the tiny crystals bounced around the inside of your mouth, and the tingling, sweet sensation on your tongue? I liken my first time listening to Brazilian Girls to eating Pop-Rocks: fun, pleasantly surprising, and deliciously entertaining."

Conor Oberst and Jenny Lewis in Nashville!

Mon Sept 22 2008

bohemianlullaby: "I'll start with the first of many 'almosts' of my interesting trip to Nashville for the Jenny Lewis and Conor Oberst show. I was ten seconds away from meeting both Jenny Lewis and Johnathan Rice. Now before you jump to conclusions and assume I was stalking them, you should know that summer eyes and I were innocently driving around downtown Nashville, trying to find a Wal-Mart. As we cruised by the river, she pointed out a couple on the walk. She was a petite redhead with a flowy hippie dress on, and he, clad in an uber-tight black shirt, had mousy brown hair almost as long as hers. Complete with matching Ray-Bans."

Mogger of the Week

Say hello to Jules09!

http://mog.com/Jules09

Jules09 may still be in high school, but aided by the boring drone of radio music and the need for real music, she’s already gone through many phases of music obsession. When she was thirteen years old she says, "I raided my dad's collection of CDs and took The Who's Ultimate Collection. It blew my mind, it was like nothing I had ever heard before. This was music of substance!" From there she discovered The Clash, and as "a suburban, St. Louis kid" she made London Calling the soundtrack to her life.

"The best band I found out about through MOG, hands down, is The National," says Jules09. "You know [how] in ‘Garden State’ Natalie Portman said that The Shins would change your life? She was wrong. The National will." She refers to Boxer and Alligator as "classic" albums. For her "straight-up rock and roll" she looks no further than Kings of Leon. "Their lyrics are what you'd expect, about chasing girls and shot glasses, but not everyone needs to write like Voltaire to get the message across. Good stuff."

Schoolwork might interfere with Jules09 posting as often as she wishes she could, but it doesn’t get in the way of the amount of live concerts she’s seen just this year. "I'm probably most happy that I got to see Muse in a venue with about 1500 other people, and then later hearing they sold out Wembley Stadium. But seeing Modest Mouse twice (and both times with Johnny Marr, no less!), British Sea Power tearing up a small local club, The Mars Volta playing for literally three hours straight, and Radiohead (what else really needs to be said about Radiohead?) in less than a year has made 2008 the best concert year for me so far."

Stop by and say hi to Jules09!

Photos, Review: My Morning Jacket Live In Charlottesville, VA

Blogger Live Music Blog writes: Last Thursday, I finally ended my summer concert drought and my long wait for catching My Morning Jacket in 2008. The band played Charlottesville Pavilion, my hometown venue. It's a great outdoor pavilion tacked onto the end of Charlottesville's downtown pedestrian mall and an awesome place to see a show. The crowd was a bit sparse as the show got started. Perhaps it was the Thursday night bill or the band's attempt at being super-punctual, so as to play the maximum amount of music; they actually came on a bit late. But after over two and a half hours of music, the place had filled out nicely and both the crowd and band seemed to love every minute of it.

Album Reviews of the Week

Artist: Metallica Album: Death Magnetic Thu Sept 11 2008

MetalSucks: "When considering their latest album, it's important to bear in mind the lasting power of Metallica's legacy, especially when taking into consideration the weak efforts of the past couple decades. This is a band that had had a hand in building up the traditional Thrash framework throughout the '80s into an impenetrable fortress." http://mog.com/blog_post/content/70/192793

Artist: The Residents Album: The Bunny Boy Wed Sept 10 2008

Spencer Owen: "A portrait of the reviewer as a young man, yes, but not as young as when I was just past boyhood, when I first heard the Residents as a 14-year-old and decided this Cryptic music was uberphenomenal. Their '70s catalogue, even through the earliest '80s, was and is seen by me as one of the finest and longest runs of fine records made by one artist/collective/band in a row." More: http://mog.com/Spencer_Owen/blog/192558

Artist: Okkervil River Album: The Stand Ins Fri Sept 12 2008

Tiny Mix Tapes: "There is no redemption in rock 'n' roll. Show business is just a place where the emotionally deprived search for acceptance, a place where people use one another to get ahead. Pop singers are an especially manipulative bunch, insane egos driven to the spotlight to fulfill a craving that cannot be sated, no matter how many records are produced, how many groupies are fucked, and how many hearts are broken." More: http://mog.com/blog_post/content/318/193845

Artist: Shinedown Album: The Sound of Madness Wed Sept 10 2008

MetalSucks: "If you're brutaler than brutal, stop reading this review right now. If you only care to listen to the heaviest shit possible and can't be bothered by hard rock, stop reading. But if you can keep your cool-o-meter in check and want to know about an awesome record, then keep going. That record is The Sound of Madness by Shinedown, and it's easily the best hard rock record of 2008, eons ahead of the pack of the ho-hum radio rock bands with which they're usually lumped in." More: http://mog.com/blog_post/content/70/192301

Artist: Kimya Dawson Album: Alphabutt Thu Sept 11 2008

Tiny Mix Tapes: "Oh, Generation X and Y, how old you've gotten. You've got your tattoos, your piercings, your exceptionally coveted collection of ironic thrift store t-shirts, your Flickr accounts filled with photos of you and your friends at Lollapalooza, you and your friends at your wedding…and, of course, more photos than you ever thought possible of this new little baby creature that you've brought into this world." More: http://mog.com/blog_post/content/318/192771

Artist: The Streets Album: Everything is Borrowed Thu Sept 11 2008

In Search of Arcadia: "So, not entirely unlike Bloc Party, The Streets just sort of came out of (almost) nowhere and said "Oh yeah, the album will be out next week". Now this wasn't AS big a surprise as Bloc Party... I suppose we've very quickly come to learn that if we're seeing free tracks, or a single floating around, an album is probably around the corner." God is a DJ. I am a DJ. Therefore, I am God Tue Sept 9 2008

drewfonts: "I was recently honored by a couple of friends with a request to DJ at their wedding. This promises to be my first appearance behind the decks (or more likely, a laptop), and so I have been giving the playlist a grave amount of attention lately. Subsequently, some anxieties began to arise." More: http://mog.com/drewfonts/blog/190925

MusicFestNW Final Report: Fleet Foxes, Sir Mix-a-Lot, Bobby Bare Jr. and No Regrets Tue Sept 9 2008

Jenny Tatone: "They go by too fast, these music festivals, and leave you wondering where it all went and what you took away from it. In retrospect, MusicFest NW seems a music-fed whirlwind of heat and noise and crowds and adrenalin and drinks. Friends will ask me: "What did you see that you really liked? Who did you like best?" And I'll feel like a candidate stumped in a job interview, pushing through the clouds in my brain for a good answer, only to resurface with a handful of unenthusiastic guesses." Moshito: Festival in The Desert & Comrade Fatso Mon Sept 15 2008

Jonh Ingham: "Everyone wants to go to the Festival In The Desert. Mani, the festival producer, glides through our desire to get free tickets with alacrity. The people who have been (mostly journalists) make it clear that this is not a day on the grass before going home to the jacuzzi. "Two months later you're still getting sand out of your ears," says Daniel from French radio. Somehow that makes it sound more desirable." More: http://mog.com/Jonh_Ingham/blog/195416

Shots Ring Out: "Sometimes I feel like music blogging is the 21st century's answer to sailing for spices. For the last few thousand years humans have been constantly exploring new land and planting flags in new soil, satisfying that explorer's itch. In the last few generations, however, this ability suddenly vanished as we ran out of new land and spices to discover." More: http://mog.com/blog_post/content/309/190853

Metal Hair Care 101 with Ronnie James Dio Tue Sept 9 2008

MetalSucks: "Being a metal master isn't easy; that skullet certainly doesn't take care of itself. That's why we decided to track down Ronnie James Dio* of Heaven and Hell to find out the secrets behind rocking metal's most metal hair-do, the almighty skullet. Ronnie was kind enough to share his tips and tricks behind his luscious locks with other aspiring skulleteers for the benefit of metal and mankind." More: http://mog.com/blog_post/content/70/191215

Inside Daft Punk's Helmets Tue Sept 9 2008

Quarterlifeparty: "This weekend I was talking about trying dress up for Halloween as the best dressed "band" in music: Daft Punk. The hard part would be making the helmets. This lead to a long (and informative) internet journey that led me from the $65,000 original helmets, to comicon people making their own" More: http://mog.com/blog_post/content/314/191211

Vampire Weekend: 9-10-08, The Pageant (from a half-fan's perspective) Thu Sept 11 2008

Jules09: "I wasn't sure about going to Vampire Weekend. When I posted a few months ago with a list of upcoming concerts with them on it, the majority of you said to skip them. They've become one of the most polarizing bands in indie music today. Entire opinions can be formed by the simple question of 'So what do you think about Vampire Weekend?'" Bumbershoot 2008: Saturday in Review Wed Sept 10 2008

Live Music Blog: "Bumbershoot 2008 kicked off this last Saturday of Labor Day weekend, and I was on hand to score some pictures and find some new live acts for all of you to put on your must-check-out lists. Considered by some to be a weak line-up this year, and others to be an amazing lineup, I have to say the lack of any extreme, must-see headliners benefited me, since I managed to check out new acts all weekend long that I would never have looked into otherwise." Photos: Perry Farrell & Dave Navarro Play Private Show at Old CBGB's Thu Sept 11 2008

indiepixie: "True, NYC Fashion week this year has been unbearably boring. Thus far, it's been filled with flowy non-descript spring dresses and B-grade stars making front row (The Hills and Gossip Girl chicks really learn a thing or too about over-exposure. They're more omnipresent on the NYC streets than those Kanye slit glasses and "Palin = Pitbull" t-shirts.) Good thing tho, rock and roll (and parties with free alcohol) has saved the day." Bon Iver Live in London Mon Sept 15 2008

The Line Of Best Fit: "It's been quite a year for live music, 2008; an emotional roller-coaster of euphoria and heady nostalgia and all sorts of superlatives you might reach for to try to describe a clenched throat that doesn't know if it's holding back ecstatic cheers or warm tears." "Lust for Life" at 31 Tue Sept 9 2008

Punk Turns 30: "You know that song, Lust for Life. Its got a long intro, very catchy - rhythmic, primitive guitars and drums inject in you a lust for life if you didn't already have one. And at some point in the 1990s, it seems that every advertising agency plucked the Iggy Pop - David Bowie composition to represent their product or service... a cruise line is the only one I can remember, but the song has been on TV and in movies even more." Mogger of the Week

Say hello to p-wagz!

p-wagz was a teenager when Red Hot Chili Peppers released One Hot Minute. It was significant in "[exposing] my teenage ears to alternative rock," but he notes that Oasis' album (What's the Story) Morning Glory? is what really ignited his "love affair" with music. p-wagz explains, "There was something in Oasis' music-a wall of melody and sound-that really electrified me." Growing up, p-wagz was influenced by the music his parents were into (The Who, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Moody Blues, Golden Oldies-era, The Carpenters, Fleetwood Mac, Gloria Estefan, and Bob Marley), but eventually it was his friends who ignited a real interest in music. "My friends were just more into music than me so being around them sort of forced me to be exposed to it, and as I grew older we would listen to all those post-punk bands. With this combination of genres from the 'rents, plus my own added to the mix, there's really nothing I don't like." Spoken like a true Mogger!

p-wagz has had some fun, memorable concert moments: seeing Cake perform, when "thousands upon thousands of pizza boxes were tossed into the air as they performed. It was a beautiful sight after baking in the sun for a music-filled day and watching the golden sun setting!", at Warped Tour for 311's set, his first time crowd surfing, "After a few failed attempts at crowd surfing (I'm not a good swimmer), I was up on a sea of people, only 311 had stopped playing by this time. I was so excited about the show, screaming like crazy, having a good time, when some of the band must have heard me, because I remember seeing a terrified look on Tim Mahoney's face," and lastly at a Reel Big Fish show. "About midway through their set, I remember seeing an old lady, we're talkin 60-70's, right next to me, skankin' all out. Heck, she might've been more into it than me! I was speechless, but I didn't stop, I just kept going. It was priceless!"

p-wagz, who's been mogging for over a year and a half, explains his MOG love: "I love being connected to people who are as audiophilic as myself! Personal stories, new music exposure-I can't get enough MOG!" His one gripe? "I only wish I had more time to devote to it."

Stop by and say hi to p-wagz
